12)Buzzy Linhart "Studio"
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:kcdfylo6xpbb

Buzzy Linhart contacted me via his college professor son after seeing my reviews on the All Media Guide - Allmusic.com. We developed a close friendship, so I'll say that upfront and keep you, dear reader, posted to the fact that friendship does not obscure my objectivity. Indeed, Linhart is such a powerful songwriter/performer that there is much frustration for those of us who love his music. This record is really, really great, which doubles the frustration level. Artists like Buzzy deserve the recognition and riches that a Billy Joel enjoys. Billy Joel doesn't have a tenth of the inpsiration or half the showmanship. It's a fact of life in the music biz that marketing is the entire battle, not a portion of it. If you've been bored to tears by the new studio releases from The Rolling Stones and other icons, pick up on Buzzy Linhart "Studio". "Free Soul Spirit Symphony", "Hurts So Bad It Must Be Love", these are pop gems. In July of this year Buzzy performed at the best concert I've seen in 2006. Having had dinner with both Mr. Linhart and Matt Turk (see #27) - having met these creative people after reviewing in the press or spinning their music on the air - I direct Mr. Turk to this album to see how to get that element that Turk's first two cds were heading towards, detoured on "Washington Arms". "Calico" is brilliant - music that can move you out of your seat. Music that excites. Music that is missing from today's marketplace.

17)BLOG TO COMM (A Blog on our Top 40!)

http://black2com.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_black2com_archive.html

(One final parenthetical note: my current mini-obsession with Boston-bred Velvets homage stems from an issue of Count Joseph Viglione's VARULVEN fanzine, an early 1975 ish at that before the mag went totally into rock music! In this issue amidst the horror movie info and Alfred Hitchcock pix was an article on Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, a nice albeit typically fanzine-esque piece which gives some of the Count's views on the man called Lou and his music for all that was worth [and to me it was worth PLENTY]. What striked me most about this piece was not what was said, which had pretty much been said before, but the closing remarks about the Modern Lovers and their Velvetness as well as the Kids and their cover of "Foggy Notion"[!]...not to mention some group called "The Astrals" who the Count told us were carrying on the tradition!!!!! Having never heard of the Astrals and certainly wanting to, I emailed Mr. Viglione to no avail. Even a Velvets maniac like Imants Krumins drew a blank making me toss out the question to YOU, dear blog reader. So, does anyone out there have any concrete [or even cement...hee hee, the blogmeister must have his little joke!] information on these Astrals? Any help would be appreciated!)

Hey - Chris - I e mailed you 9-24-06 - hope you get the e mail ok. JV

27)Matt Turk

? Help der="0" alt="" />

Have always loved Alvin Lee and Ten Years After's "Love To Change The World", and some elements of Matt Turk's version on his "Washington Arms" cd are worthwhile, yet in this era of cover songs being mandatory, there's just not enough identity to
this remake, that revolution that made Kim Carnes wonderfully twisted warp job on Bette Davis Eyes so stunningly different from the country/bar-room raunch of Jackie DeShannon's original masterpiece. Taking on Alvin Lee is no easy task and since Turk's introspection works better on songs like his co-write with Kevin Hupp, "Without Her", a terrific pop tune in the style of his previous two discs, what is the point of singing someone else's tune. This brings up another dilemma,
"All Over You" is certainly a fun enough song in the vein of The Rolling Stones' "Rocks Off", in sound and R rated double entendre, yet this artist hasn't substantially progressed in the 6 years since "Turktunes" emerged in 2000.
"She's sweet in sour in a tower of power" just won't cut it and "Queen Of The Set" sounds like a rush job. Why come back with work that is less than what we've heard before when progress means knocking down walls and building something better?
Matt Turk has tremendous talent, there's no doubt, and Washington Arms has its moments, but in a world overwhelmed by You Tube, My Space and PureVolume.com is just being good and creative going to be enough? Probably not. Some "Itchycoo Park" phasing and re-mixing on "I'd Love To Change The World" could make it appealing in the dance clubs - and there are limitations independent artists have, we can all agree on that. It's just that with so much competition wouldn't it be better for musicians to take two or three songs and really knock them out of the park? With a full ten songs here the job is to sell, sell, sell and get people to like the music. There is an easier way - putting one song out there that people demand. Matt Turk is capable of creating that - it's just not found on the co-write with Erik Turk that is Amanda, nor is it found on the harder driving original "Sky".

30) Blake Morgan "Silencer"

Silver Lining opens Blake Morgan's newest CD, "Silencer", like a track from John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band - "Mother" or "Remember", take your pick; the piano is richer and the voice less primal scream. More like Ian Lloyd from Stories going folksy. Track 4, "It's Gone", more introspection a la Emmit Rhodes or Paul Rodgers of FREE musing at 1 AM when some piano bar is about to close. The piano heavy album is well done, Morgan delivering a very personal message on his fourth album. (See a review on AMG of "Burning Daylight" #35 on this chart).

"This might not be as platinum as Trash or as explosive as Killer, but the older, wiser Alice Cooper devastates with subtle intensity and venomous lyrics."
doesn't mean it is not vital. Brian Wilson's "Smile" is an important and listenable disc (no matter how much window dressing his producers put on it because of his "condition"), and the new album from Tommy James has him working his craft in new and exciting ways
