#1 ESSRA MOHAWK
First
time on CD. Top notch Philly new wave - hot and heady female vocals by
Zappa protoge' Mohawk - originally released in 1985. Still ahead of its
time. Drum machines are used with live drums by original SNL drummer
Daoud Shaw. Rich synths.
Genre: Rock: 80's Rock
Release Date: 2005
REVIEW BY JOE VIGLIONE
Essra Mohawk's 20th Anniversary re-release of E-Turn starts off with "Let Her Know," a punchy, uptempo dance, 80's style with the singer's distinctive style. It's got the same beat pretty much as Tony Basil's "Mickey" and is a wonderful segue matched with that classic. "You're A Mover" has a heavy-on-the-pause bassline from Steve Beskrone - (who's also played with Pat Martino, Ray Charles, The O'Jays...) for the slinky, spy-novel trance-rock, a transitional new wave goes 80s track. "Mankind" cries for Essra to go back to her days with the Mothers of Invention to add a little extra chaos to the apocalyptic "we aren't going to make it" theme of James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. There are exquisite pop nuances that drift inside the corners of this tune, tucked inside the gloom and doom electro pop.
A pink six page insert has the lyrics, which helps the listener when one of my favorite tracks here, "Silver Ships" comes in as the antidote to "Mankind." A wonderful ballad with a divine hook/chorus, it's science meets religion and fantasy, just a stunning track that puts the depth of Essra's talent on display. "Jealousy" brings the dance back, and in 1985 it should have been a big hit on the dance floor and radiowaves. "Digital" seems to be an answer to Alice Cooper's "We're All Clones" while Track 8, "All for Your Love" is four minutes and forty four seconds of more sublime music, melody and words that Essra is a master of. There's a 3 minute 46 second driving "Change of Heart" - the song that hit for Cyndi Lauper a year later (and went Top 3) in 1986. Bobby King's guitar rocks, the tone Ricky Byrd put into so many Joan Jett classics blending perfectly with Essra's vocal style. "It's Our Future" closes out the dozen tracks, the entire offering sounding like a concept album, even with the bonus tracks. It all works nicely together and is a fun outing that begs for repeated spins.

4)David Clayton Thomas
"Sunny" on the CD Soul Ballads by David Clayton Thomas is as lush as anything off of Frank Sinatra and/or Linda Ronstadt's Nelson Riddle albums. As much piano cabaret as it is elegant standard with symphonic strings, this is Clayton-Thomas mature and without the tough angst of his over-the-top hits with Blood, Sweat and Tears. Where Brenda Holloway, singer and co-writer of "You Made Me So Very Happy" approached her tune with tenderness, Clayton-Thomas belted the declaration of pure joy (a la Bobby Hebb's own "Love You" with the same exact theme,) with a sledgehammer. Here, the singer that launched Blood, Sweat and Tears second album into the stratosphere gives the Holloway approach to Bobby Hebb's "Sunny." It's superb and shows that Clayton-Thomas is still a force to be reckoned with.

8)ALEXIS KEEGAN CLEAN SLATE
"Don't Need You Now" opens the Clean Slate cd, a five song E.P. from Alexis Keegan. Alexis opened for Mikey Wax at the Middle East on March 23, 2015 and like Wax she has a strong stage presence and songs that have equally potent hooks. You can hear "Don't Need You Now" on her website along with the three minutes and fifty eight seconds of "Just A Little" and her elegantly painful "Your Name in My Heartbeat."
The Top 10 of our Top 40 gets played on Joe Vig's POP EXPLOSION radio program, going back on the air mid-April...stay tuned.

30)GARY MOORE LIVE AT BUSH HALL
GARY MOORE
LIVE AT BUSH HALL 2007
Eagle Records / Universarl
Review by Joe Viglione
Recorded in London, May 17, 2007, the 74 minute and 20
second CD has Gary Moore in top form, his blistering guitar all over your
eardrums on this hard-hitting blues outing which has the usual high standard packaging
from Eagle Records including an informative 8 page booklet containing Liz
Barnes’ liner notes.
“If the Devil Made Whiskey” sounds less like a blues master
and more like the grungy bootleg version of “Gimme Shelter” from the Rolling
Stones Liver Than You’ll Ever Be crossed with the Velvet Underground’s “Sister
Ray” in tonal quality. Even Chuck Berry’s
“Thirty Days,” track 2 on Gary Moore’s Live At Bush Hall, 2007, has a
Ron-Wood-on-steroids guitar sound, heavier and dirtier than Chuck – or the
Rolling Stones’ renditions of Berry, could ever aspire to be. This contrasts with the eight minute and
thirty six seconds of “Don’t Say A Word,” with a vibe very similar to Ten Years
After’s “Love Like A Man,” only it drives towards the end in its own, unique way.
Moore’s band a quartet (including him)
like TYA – only with his reliable friend from many Moore albums, drummer Brian
Downey (founding member of Thin Lizzy, which had Moore in the band for less
than half a year,) Vic Martin on keyboards and Pete Rees on bass, all
delivering the goods. The almost 7
minute “Still Got the Blues” takes “Don’t Say a Word” style-isms even deeper
into the genre.
The first five tracks are the shorter bursts while the
titles grow longer as the concert progresses.
“Sundown” – a cover of the group
Son House – closes the disc out with Moore’s acoustic/slide guitar prowess
elegant and authoritative. The album
sneaks up on you and has real staying power, not just another slice of the
blues as it is a slightly different perspective on the artform.

Gary Moore was one of the finest and most respected guitarists of his generation, with a rich musical career both in bands and as a solo artist. He had a vibrant love affair with rock and the blues, which is proudly and loudly heard on "Live At Bush Hall 2007".
This show, recorded at London's Bush Hall on May 17, 2007, was originally broadcast by Planet Rock radio. This is the first time the complete show has been made available outside of this original broadcast. The concert features a number of tracks from Gary's then newly released "Close As You Get" album (Eagle Rock Entertainment), such as "Eyesight To The Blind" and "I Had A Dream", many of which he rarely played live after this, alongside classics from his extensive back catalogue, such as "Don't Believe A Word", "Walking By Myself", "Still Got The Blues" and many more.
Gary Moore was an unmatched live performer, a virtuoso who also made a visceral connection with any audience, and "Live At Bush Hall 2007" is a perfect representation of his masterwork onstage.
RIP Gary Moore February 6, 2011, Estepona, Spain
Rock legend Gary Moore died after an alcohol binge that would have put him nearly five times over the drink-drive limit, tests have revealed.
The Thin Lizzy star suffered a heart attack brought on by the massive amount of alcohol he knocked back at the start of a holiday in Spain, the studies showed.

36) ZEPPARELLA
A Rockin' Friday Night at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, Massachusetts with Zepparella
by guest writer Ed Wrobleski
Reviewed on March 14, 2015
March 13, 2015 I went out to catch this great San Francisco, California
based group of women musicians paying tribute to their favorite
legendary rock band and heroes Led Zeppelin. Their devotion to the material shows, their drummer Clementine was playing so hard on the song
"Moby Dick" that she put a hole through her snare drum during this
particular performance. The Jon Bonham style that counterparts Lez Zepplin display http://www.lezzeppelin.com/ Clementine has down pat, as does guitarist Gretchen Menn doing her best Jimmy Page, especially on Dazed and Confused, Menn indulging in the violin bow a la page on his live performances of this
classic rock gem. By the end of the performance the bow was totally
shredded, and so were the eardrums of many in the audience. Bassist Angeline Saris and singer Noel Doughty gave the audience a distinctly different tribute - Zeppelin with female doppelgangers bring the classic rock to life from the prism of these gals and their life experience.
Zepparella - a take-off, no doubt, on the Jane Fonda sci-fi film Barbarella, will perform at a festival this summer in Hunter New York with Robert Plant himself among the variety of groups.
Below is a list of songs and a few clips from youtube from this particular performance i attended. A few songs i would have liked to see performed but didn't probably due to time restraints but here are some i would have liked to see and hear: Stairway To Heaven, Black Dog, Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid,
