1)SAVED ALL THE PIECES
JOHN FANNON

http://www.tmrzoo.com/2013/47997/music-review-john-fannons-saved-all-the-pieces

New England lead singer John Fannon's Saved All the Pieces CD is a superb 11 track excursion into thick sound, majestic melody and perfect arrangements.  "Just You And Me" opens the disc resplendent in Abbey Road Beatles' musings underscored with remnants of Pink Floyd and a little Melissa Manchester to boot. "Just Run", co-written with New England bandmate Jimmy Waldo could be Fannon's old producer, Todd Rundgren, teaming up with him for a post-Utopia ballad.  Perhaps the time for a Rundgren/Fannon pairing is long overdue? Fannon actually sounds like Robert Plant meets Peter Gabriel by way of Sutherland Brothers and Quiver on "Just Run." It's powerful stuff. The first two tracks are the immediate and hold your attention like few pop albums on the current marketplace, each selection as impressive as the one before. On "Just Run" it's post-Beatles "Real Love" guitarmanship, droll, eerie pulsating sublime maneuverings all at once. Very nice indeed. "Go On Your Way" harkens back to early British rock while final track, "So Here I Am", eloquent in its simplicity.  Title track "Saved All the Pieces" a precise John Batdorf sort of bit of insight while "Running Easy", track 9, expands the theme the title song initiated. It's a joy to gush when an album has so much to offer and Fannon has hit it out of the park with this one.  Phil Greene and Tony Ricci are mentioned in the credits along with Paul Cervone and thanks going out to his colleagues in New England and notable protégé Peter Zicko.  It's a stunning achievement and next to Steve Hunter's Manhattan Blues Project in my Top 5 for the year so far.

2)Golden Scarab
R.I.P. Ray Manzarek

More than Full Circle and Other Voices, The Golden Scarab is the best embodiment of the Doors by one of the three surviving members, and it is amazing it wasn't a huge underground smash. With mentions of moonlight drives, tightrope rides, and titles of past Doors tunes in "The Solar Boat," drummer Tony Williams, guitarist Larry Carlton, bassist Jerry Scheff, and producer Bruce Botnick generate an eerie sound behind the singer, creating a title track as mysterious and fun as anything by Morrison and company. With intense rhythms and tons of creativity, Ray Manzarek brings us on a musical journey as unique as The Phantom's Divine Comedy, and if Robbie Krieger brought the commercial element to the Doors' gravy train, it is clear here that the eldest of the quartet had more a hand in the development of the Doors persona than he may have been given credit for. One can't fault Krieger and John Densmore for stretching out with Butts Band, but there is a certain responsibility hit artists should have to their audience. The Bright Midnight releases finally address those concerns, but decades before the opening of the Doors tape vaults, that sound from L.A. Woman was most obvious on "The Purpose of Existence Is?" on this solo effort. Yes, Ray Manzarek veers off into his jazz leanings; given the players on this, how could he not? But he gives enough of a taste of past glories to make The Golden Scarab accessible, spoon feeding his musical styles to those who couldn't get enough of the music he was associated with. It's dramatic and cohesive, making more sense than Jim Morrison much of the time, with more controlled insanity. It is amazing that such a fine work as The Golden Scarab escaped the masses, and shameful that classic hits stations don't add this to their incessant repertoire. Had Jim Morrison lived, this is the path the music of the Doors should have taken. Smooth and demanding of repeated spins.

3)STEVE HUNTER, THE DEACON with
MANHATTAN BLUES PROJECT   #1 disc for June

#3 (#1 for June)     Steve Hunter
Steve “the Deacon” Hunter’s The Manhattan Blues Project (Deaconrecords (884501903240) is a superb and visionary exploration of the guitar that sets a mood and lends itself to repeated spins. Opening with “Prelude to the Blues” you can hear tender melodies from Alice Cooper’s “I Never Cry” slipping into the guitarlines while 222 W.23rd has a panther-like feel setting the tone perfectly for any upcoming spy movie interested in picking this up.   Hunter whispers the song title as well as the word “electrified” in the middle of the song; that –  and some Abbey Road-styled backing vocals on “Gramercy Park” – are the only voices this critic hears on the otherwise all instrumental disc.
Track 5 is a cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill” and though Gabriel’s brilliance cannot be denied I tend to like the instrumental here better.   The fact that Steve Hunter and his colleague, Dick Wagner, played on the former Genesis lead singer’s 1977 Car album, produced by Bob Ezrin, is notable as Hunter is probably the guitar player on the Peter Gabriel solo hit (or one of them as King Crimson’s Robert Fripp also appears on the Car lp).  Read more here:

7) MC3
Acoustic, arty, modern-folk that captures aspects of the old 60s/70s ethos that saw a number of units with free spirits and progressive sentiments trying all kinds of experimental formats to greater or lesser degree.
Genre: Folk: Modern Folk
Release Date:
 http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mc31
Public Access TV History as Mr. Curt and MC3 appear on Visual Radio Live on Thursday July 11
Mr. Curt was on TV Eye with Joe Vig in 1979 with his band PASTICHE

A Half Bubble off Plumb by MC3 (no relation to the Motor City 5 or MC5) is a new CD from Mr. Curt of Pastiche / the EXIs and friends Marty White, Clara Kebabian along with percussionist Goss.
Mr. Curt has always delved into the esoteric, in both music and inspirations, and “Dear Friends” opens up this 11 song collection with those sentiments and more. If the new Mark Lindsay (of Paul Revere & The Raiders) CD could be considered a “Marvel Pop Art Production” comic book turned record album (by way of the Nuggets compilation), Mr. Curt and Clara Kebabian teaming up is Art-Rock meets country punk. The final track, “Cloud of Ease”, takes the listener into the realm of sound, something that many artists forget about in trying to write a mainstream masterpiece (or a hit song to make millions and millions of dollars). The experimental positioning of “Are We There Yet” resembles early Small Faces meets early Deep Purple (pre-Heavy Metal face, of course, when they were a charming British prog rock outfit stretching the boundaries) at their most adventurous “Geronimo”, on the other hand, is right out of Cowboy Junkies meets Roger McGuinn, a delightful pop slice that is most commercial, so much so that it jumps off the disc as a radio friendly strum with heartfelt vocals and fun movement.

\
With Marty White of Third Rail on bass, Goss just added on drums, the drama is complete (making it MC4…if they expand MC4 will have to add two more musicians to keep John Sinclair (manager of proto-punk-band MC5)and the boys from protesting). This blend helps drive Clara’s voice on the easy listening “Peonies” (it is Marty White and electronic drums, Goss hadn't joined the band at the time of the recording)). “The Grandfather” needs to be covered by Yoko Ono and sons on her next outing while “Are We There Yet” cries for Ornette Coleman’s alto saxophone.
It’s fun to have veterans like Mr. Curt and Marty White back and doing such significant work, with Clara Kebabian shining as a unique and important voice that makes Mc3 or Mc4 or Mc600 look like an interesting prospect when they hit the club scene.

8)Charlie Farren  TUESDAY

“Tuesday” is the title track from the upcoming solo album from Charlie Farren.  It was written by Brad Delp of the groups Boston and RTZ and Farren does a stunning job of capturing the voice – and the emotion – of Delp.
Back in 1988 when this writer was managing Mission Control Studios for genius producer Michael Jonzun I awoke to Brad Delp recording downstairs.  I said “It’s an honor to wake up to hear one of your favorite singers of all time.”  Brad replied: “It’s scarier for me singing” (at that hour in the morning!).  The songs Delp recorded (I believe they were with Dave Brown, guitarist with Billy Joel) could have included “Tuesday.” I remember the three titles they were working on having a distinct Beatles meet Steely Dan vibe to them.
Brad never finished the work…or ever put it in release.  Farren got permission from Delp’s family and they were “very enthusiastic and supportive.”  Thus, Brad Delp’s beautiful “Tuesday”  can be appreciated by the world.
As Alvin Lee’s “Real Life Blues” (with George Harrison and Jon Lord) was a departure from Woodstock’s “fastest guitar alive” “I’m Goin’ Home”, hearing Farren’s tender rendition of Delp shows the dexterity, technical skill and fluency of both artists – one a lead singer for the hard-rock of the band Boston, the other the lead singer of the even harder rocking Joe Perry Project.
Farren recorded the vocal and guitar in his home studio then had producer Anthony J. Resta (Duran Duran, Collective Soul) add a Cello quartet as well as ambient guitars. The result is one of the strongest Farren releases to date.

10)Blackmore's Night
Dancer And the Moon

The new album DANCER AND THE MOON is available for purchase in regular cd configuration and deluxe edition in digipak, including a bonus DVD featuring a 40 mins "making of the album" documentary and bonus acoustic versions of "The Spinner's Tale," "Somewhere Over The Sea/Moon Was Shining," "The Ashgrove," and "Queen For A Day." The album is also available in a super-deluxe edition strictly limited to 2000 copies packaged in a polyston frame with the cover artwork printed on canvas and including a black tote bag with Blackmore's Night artwork, 4 Blackmore's Night pins, a certificate of authenticity and of course the deluxe edition.

Formed in 1997 by Candice Night and Ritchie Blackmore, the two began working together first in Ritchie's previous group Rainbow, when Candice co-wrote a number of songs, most notably "Ariel" and "Black Masquerade" for Rainbow's 1996 album, STRANGER IN US ALL. DANCER AND THE MOON is the band's 8th original studio album, with each disc topping the European and American Billboard's New Age charts. When Blackmore's Night began it's journey, skeptics had their reservations that finding an audience would be impossible. Someone once wrote that “love conquers all” and Blackmore's Night's love for the music has found an audience that loves the magic this enduring couple have been conjuring up in an almost 20-year love affair. Open your ears and your hearts, there's plenty of passion to go around.

13)Steve Chizmadia  Jack of All Trades

http://www.tmrzoo.com/2013/48000/music-review-jack-of-all-trades-by-steve-chizmadia
"His got his old man's dream" sings Steve Chizmadia in "Nashville Star", a charming modern country pop song with old world styling.  Produced with the expert guidance of Peter Calo this disc is chock full of potential hits, if not for Chizmadia, perhaps other artists. "I'm Still Me Are You Still You" would be perfect for a Kenny Loggins / Jim Messina reunion, nice pauses between the guitar strum and the lyric.  The arrangements are smart and let the singer's voice cuts through in a friendly and appealing way.  "Song for Pete" is for Weavers legend Pete Seeger, a pensive reflection on the American folk hero.  There's a song for the "Memphis Girl" and one for the "Louisiana Girl" - Louisiana getting almost five minutes to the three for the chick from Memphis, so perhaps the singers heart was more taken by the inspiration for this mellow paean with floating guitars straight out of Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey."  "Rebuild This City" is a nice song for driving a lonely highway at night. At 5:20 it’s the longest track on this pleasing disc full of hope and pretty melodies.

19)Ventures Play the Greatest Surfin' Hits of All Time CD

 by Joe Viglione
Varese Sarabande has outdone itself with this marvelous package of surf instrumentals by the Ventures, containing 18 tracks that surely fit into the "space age bachelor pad" category of fun sounds with the superb playing that listeners expect from the legendary group. "Out of Limits" is short and sweet at 1:59 -- but full of vibrant '60s energy and distinctive guitar. From the "Hawaii Five-O" theme to the tension of "Lonely Surfer," this is a really superb lineup of songs, a nice companion disc to the In Search of Eddie Riff masterpiece by Roxy Music's Andy Mackay. Sure, fans of the Ventures have heard it all, but for those outside of the cult who want a great slice of work from a veteran group with an enormous catalog, this collection is it. It comes with a detailed eight-page booklet with Jim Pewter liner notes and images of bathing suits in front of the waves. What more could one ask for? Musical ramblings like "Baja" are most welcome, and as interesting as "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" and the very cool rendition of "Wipe Out." It's not the Surfaris "Wipe Out," mind you; it's more laid-back and party-sounding -- as if the band were playing in the back of a Saturday night dancehall on some obscure lake in the forest, bringing the waves and the sun to those in the dark. There's a lot of depth to this disc, which you will definitely want to explore (and try to imitate in your garage with your Fender amp) and play over and over again. ~ Joe Viglione All tracks have been digitally remastered. In March of 1993 Greg Hawkes, keyboard player for The Cars, brought his copy of the legendary Cars demo tapes to Audio One in Arlington. It was a snowy night, and we were datting them up for airplay on my "Demo That Got The Deal" show on WCGY April 4, 1999. Now, Rhino has released wonderful versions of these classic Car-tunes, the original "Just What I Needed", the original "Moving In Stereo", this is a record you need! 13 demos and one live track ("Good Times Roll", 1978), five of the demos are unissued songs. DJ Maxanne Sartori writes the first page of the booklet, as well she should..."includes the demo that "got them their deal", "Just What I Needed" was originall heard on WBCN in early "77"... This is it, "Featuring Janis Joplin", "Cheap Thrills", "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama" and "Pearl", all re-mastered with bonus tracks, and a fifth CD if you buy the box, "Rare Pearls." Rare Pearls features two out-takes from the Cheap Thrills Session, produced by John Simon (and engineered, I believe, by one of Berklee's deans, Don Puluse). The additional 3 tracks are live by Kozmic Blues band, an incredible "Maybe" (a hit for The Three Degrees and The Chantels) and a mesmerizing "Bo Diddley". You've never heard Janis or "Bo Diddley" sounding like this, imagine the chaos of The Velvet Underground with Joplin wailing away, this is the most terrific find of the year and should be on modern rock radio all across the country.

33)Rolling Stones Under Review

This DVD continues the saga in the “Under Review” series which started with Vol. 1 1962-1966, Vol. 2 1967-1969, leapfrogging over the most pivotal moments 1970-1974 and beginning with Mick Taylor leaving and the start of the “Ronnie Wood Years on this 1975-1983. Of course the Ronnie Wood Years are 1975-2013 and beyond… so perhaps this should have been called, The Ronnie Wood Years, Phase 1.
With critics telling the Stones’ history and pontificating, these documentaries – while being as melodramatic as possible and emphasizing any band member’s drug use – have the omnipresent narrator, insight from the writers and clips of the group to tell the saga. Anthony DeCurtis is always worth hearing and his commentary …”I think it’s fair to say that “Some Girls” and “Tattoo You” are probably the last two Rolling Stones albums that really, kind of, fully addressed the moment, are important records that are about that time and also find the Rolling Stones driving some of the things that are going on rather than sort of chasing them.” For we purists there are two amazing phases – the Brian Jones era and the Jimmy Miller/Mick Taylor years  Read more here:

37)Dick Wagner  FULL MELTDOWN
15 selections from the artistry of Dick Wagner on a compilation entitled Full Meltdown come with the obligatory 4 page liner notes/insert that we who appreciate classic rock need….  “Still Hungry” open(s) the disc, a 1991 production created at Trax Studios in Los Angeles with Jack White on drums, Matt Bissonnette on bass and Fred Mandel on keyboards/B3. It slips into “Blue Collar Babies”, one of six songs recorded at Gil Markle’s Long View Farm in 1979 with a band called Meltdown, managed by the late Charlie McKenzie, he of the group Boston and Willie Loco Alexander fame.
The 90s and 70s material actually sounds very 80s, infringing on the territory that Eddie Money, 38 Special and Van Halen traveled, though Wagner has more grit than Money and 38 Special and his formidable songwriting skills make these titles a bit more appealing than some of the music that actually made it to radio.
“Insatiable Girl” from the 1991 Los Angeles sessions could be a sequel to the 1989 Grammy winner from Robert Palmer, “Simply Irresistable” while ‘I’d Take The Bullet’… and “Another Twist Of The Knife”… would’ve been good for Alice Cooper back in the day… The delightful cover of “Stagger Lee” opens with a John Lennon-styled vocal straight out of Double Fantasy…I played this for Buzzy Linhart over the phone tonight (11/22/09) and Buzzy thought the arrangement was ‘fantastic’ (it is)…’Stagger Lee’ is close to four minutes and the song becomes a Bob Seger-like “Hollywood Nights” talk/song…the material from Long View Farm was lost to the ages until recently, Gil Markle telling GemmZine “Many of these tracks were recorded at Long View in 1979, and lay undiscovered in a mis-labeled packing container for almost 30 years. The members of Charlie McKenzie’s Boston-based band “Meltdown” played on some of them. The rest were recorded a few years later, mostly in L.A. I re-mastered the material for Dick in Tobago.’ (On) ‘Ecstasy’… the riffing and guitars (move) from pop/rock into progressive becoming something totally original in the process…
For Alice Cooper fans there’s Dick’s own version of the co-write that he created with Desmond Child and Cooper, “I Might As Well Be On Mars”….and Dick does a fine job on voice and all instruments…
It’s great to have this music produced by Dick Wagner compiled so uniformly, the liner notes precisely telling where and when each track was laid down and who plays on it along with two letters from Dick to the reader/listener all packed in a good compilation for his long-time followers and those who appreciate superb musicianship and creative songwriting.

#40  ICEHOUSE
^ Viglione, Joe. "Heroes review". allmusic. Retrieved 2008-06-13.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icehouse_%28band%29
Originally released in Australia in 1995 as The Berlin Tapes, an album that arrived in at least three different versions with a variety of different songs, most notably a Japanese collection that added four more covers, this 2004 release on Diva Records opens and closes with the David Bowie/Brian Eno classic as bookends, putting the majority of Iva Davies' album of cover tunes in between. Missing is Public Image Ltd's "Disappointed" from the original lineup, but otherwise Icehouse's nod to influential music by Lou Reed, Frank Sinatra, Bowie, XTC, Roxy Music, the Psychedelic Furs et al., appears obvious to those musicoligists who were attracted to the tunes in their first incarnation. What Davies has created is a textbook for the next generation, his grasp of Lou Reed playing Sinatra with the original song "Berlin," only Davies quotes the whacked-out version from the Berlin album and fuses it with Sinatra's "All The Way." That's the most glaring mistake on this reconstituted disc, as the song in its primary state is one of Reed's most commercial. Thus, as a textbook, that lesson is like a chapter missing for the kids of the new millennium. There's no doubt the Icehouse singer has impeccable taste, combining "Loving the Alien" and "Sister Europe" on record with the Velvet Underground classic "All Tomorrow's Parties" is like going hunting with Dick Cheney -- the targets are easy and right in front of you, but there's always the chance of getting sprayed.  Read more here:

SPECIAL MENTION:

But where has he been for the last 20 years? Stephen Kessler ("Vegas Vacation") wanted to know, so he set out to find Williams. The result is an exhilarating film about a fan finally meeting his hero and getting him to open up about his career and why he seemed to simply give it all up. The revelations in PAUL WILLIAMS: STILL ALIVE will stun and move fans, particularly when Williams opens up about his personal struggles and his triumphant return to the music industry as the president of ASCAP.

A wistful musical journey that will reintroduce a new generation to Williams' soulful classics, PAUL WILLIAMS: STILL ALIVE is the charmingly self-narrated story of what happens when a nostalgic filmmaker finally catches up with his hero.

42)White House Down
It has been 19 years since the release of Stargate, the first release in what is a serious science fiction tale that has become a popular franchise. Roland Emmerich was at the helm for the financially successful James Spader / Kurt Russell adventure, two years before the blockbuster Independence Day. Where Stargate quadrupled its 55 million dollar investment to almost two hundred million dollars, Independence Day brought in about 817 million on a 75 million dollar budget, substantially more, but also the beginning of a troublesome trend for Emmerich, superfluous forced humor and in-your-face patronizing to everything from silly jokes to alcoholism, annoying stereotypes, grandiose self-importance all shaken, stirred and delivered to maximize revenue.
So with the Roland Emmerich name stamped on what every reviewer in the history of the cinema has figured out, that this is a blatant remake of Olympia Has Fallen, the March 2013 offering from director Antoine Fuqua and 300 star Gerard Butler, one might expect yet another 2012, The Day After Tomorrow or Godzilla. But keep in mind, on May 28, 1999, three years after Independence Day, Roland and his sister,Ute Emmerich, along with Marco Weber produced director Josef Rusnak’s brilliant and oft-forgotten The Thirteenth Floor, a smart revisit to The Matrix which emerged two months prior to The Thirteenth Floor. The Matrix was the blockbuster, the Thirteenth Floor relegated to doing a little better than breaking even. But it did show that Emmerich has a sense of the importance of sci-fi cinema and that he can take things seriously.
